MUSIC AT
BLUE RIDGE
Music has always been an
important part of worship here at Blue Ridge, evolving from one voice
leading the singing accompanied by a pump organ, to the formation of
choirs, the addition of the Hammond organ in 1952, which was later moved
into the Chapel, and the installation of our pipe organ in 1965.
Additional pipes were added to the organ in 1977 for a total of 29
ranks. Our newest addition was the grand piano in 2000.
The Chancel Choir has been
around for decades, for longer than most of us can remember. Over the
years it has been led by several choir directors, some of whom are with
us today. The majority of the current Chancel Choir members have been
singing in the Choir for many, many years, and we hope we will all be
around for years to come. This includes our Music Assistant, Debbie
Keeton, who has attended Blue Ridge all her life, and whose mother,
Martha Keeton, was organist. We always welcome new members.
Mr. Rick Gilpin has been our
Chancel Choir Director since September, 2008.
Rick Gilpin
joins us as director of Men’s Ensemble, Chancel Choir, and as song
leader at the 10:30 service. Rick has degrees in music education and
administration, and directs the choral program at Raytown High School,
and teaches at Raytown Central Middle School. Rick has been a church
musician all his life.
Our Director of
Music and Organist is Mrs. Linda Mann. After coming to this church as a
youth in 1969 and singing in the Youth Choir, Linda has been serving in
the music ministry of this church ever since. She joined the church
staff in 1975, first playing the piano for the children’s choir. She
became the organist in 1976, and then also the Director of Music in
1987. She directs the Cornerstone Praise Band and Choir, which she
helped form in 1998, as well as bell choirs, youth choir, and many other
musical activities. Apart from church, Linda accompanies the vocal
music department at Truman High School for their numerous musical
classes and performances.
In the fall of 2007, The
Chancel Choir of Blue Ridge commissioned nationally known composer and
pianist Joseph Martin to write
an anthem in honor of Linda Mann, Director of Music. On March 16, 2008,
Mr. Martin performed at all three worship services and later that
afternoon at a concert. Accompanied by The Chancel Choir, members
of The Cornerstone Praise Choir, The Youth Choir and guest singers
he presented his anthem entitled Psalm of Exaltation which is
based on scripture verses from Psalms 34 and
108.

SINGING |
|
The people of all ages who
participate in music groups at Blue Ridge not only have a deep love of
music in their hearts, but love for the Lord and their church. Being
disciples of Jesus, they give their talents and gifts, offering praise
to God and helping to lead in worship. They find spiritual fulfillment
in practicing, learning, growing and communing with others. It is a
continual part of their faith journey, and Blue Ridge is blessed with
many wonderful volunteers. Perhaps you would like to make music a part
of your church life. You are welcome to visit any time and get a feel
for our different ensembles! Child care is available upon request for
all adult groups. |
Chancel Choir
Chancel Choir provides music for the 10:50 service, with practices on
Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30. The choir sings a wide variety of music, with
two larger presentations during Advent and Lent. We continue June-August
with a "Summer Choir" format. You are welcome to join us year round, or
for any of the above events, as your schedule permits. Short-term
ensembles that may include a Contemporary Choir and Women’s Ensemble are
also offered throughout the year. |
Angel Choir
Angel Choir is for ages two through first grade and meets on Sunday
mornings from 10:30-10:50. This is a great opportunity not only to begin a
child’s musical education but to help them realize the importance of
sharing their time and gifts with the church. |
Cornerstone Praise
Choir
Cornerstone Praise Choir provides music for our contemporary 9:30
service. Practices are Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m., year round. |
Youth Choir
Youth Choir is for grades six
through twelve and
meets on Sunday evenings as an extension of our youth fellowship time. A special
youth Sunday, a fund raiser for our summer mission trips, is an annual
event that combines drama and music. |
Men's Ensemble
Men’s Ensemble is open to youth and adults who enjoy singing that
great four-part harmony! Practices are Wednesday evenings from
7:00-7:30. |
|
RINGING |
Handbells are just plain fun!! If
you can count to 4 (occasionally 6) you can ring a handbell. We have all
ages and stages of handbell ringers, so n-e-v-e-r fear! We plan
carefully to put you in a spot to make you feel comfortable, yet grow in
your skill. If you have ne ver played an instrument you will be given
some "one-on-one" time. If you have played an instrument, you will find
ringing a snap! We have a 5 octave set of hand-bells and a 2 octave set
of choir chimes - so there's always room for more! |
Adult Bells
Adult Bells now have two groups, which grew out of our singing choirs.
Cornerstone Bells practice Tuesdays at 7:30 and Chancel Bells
practice Wednesdays at 6:30.

Other
ways youth and adults may share their gifts in the Blue Ridge Worship
Ministry are: Drama, Liturgical Dance, Sound Board, and Video
Team. |
|
If you cannot make a commitment
to a worship arts group, but have a talent,
please consider doing a solo or small ensemble for a "one time" or
"short term" presentation. |
